I wrote the song as I was preparing to leave New Zealand and move to Norway, where I had no idea what my life would be like. I was leaving behind my band and had no musical network or collaborators waiting for me in Norway, so I was grappling with the possibility of having to quit music altogether. After music being a defining part of my life for so long, this led to the question: if I’m not a musician anymore, what am I now? I think this kind of uncertainty has been really common for musicians during Covid, too.
